Rockland Police K-9  

K-9 Jessica was born in February of 2004 in Falmouth Massachusetts. Jessica was Donated to the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office in the Winter of 2005 where she was trained to be a narcotics detector dog.  In the summer of 2006 the RPD decided to add another K-9 Being a narcotics K-9, rather then cross-training the already successful K-9 Boyar.  The BCSO donated K-9 Jessica to the RPD.  Officer Somers and Jessica then went through an intensive 10 week K-9 Narcotic Detector School together.  Officer Somers became only 1 of 3 K-9 Handlers in Massachusetts to work and handle two K-9's every shift.  K-9 Jessica began riding with both Somers and Boyar and started working in the fall of 2006.  Since Jessica has started working she has found numerous amounts of drugs in Rockland and many surrounding towns which request the help of her nose on a nightly basis.  Jessica is trained to detect numerous Narcotic odors for example: Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin.  However Jessica is one of few dogs who are trained to detect the ever popular prescription narcotics seen out on the streets like Oxycontin, Suboxone, Klonopins, etc..  Jessica and Somers continue to work and train on a daily basis as Jessica is a passive indicator/food reward detector dog.  Meaning she only eats when she is detecting narcotic odor.  If they do not get anything on shift, Officer Somers must hide narcotics for Jessica to find and when she does she eats then, this makes for constant precise Training.  Jessica continues to battle the fight against drugs here in Rockland.  She is much friendlier than her partner Boyar and does an excellent job helping keep illigal narcotics off of our streets and away from our children.  Go Jesse!!!!
